General Ophthalmology and Basic Tests

Comprehensive eye care — check-ups, diagnosis and follow-up

A general ophthalmology consultation is the first step towards comprehensive eye care. It includes routine checks of visual acuity, prescription, intraocular pressure, the fundus and the anterior segment. It also covers the diagnosis and monitoring of common conditions such as glaucoma, retinal disorders, conditions affecting the ocular surface and the eyelids, as well as the early detection of eye diseases in children and adults.

Diagnostic tests available

Visual acuity and refraction

Test your ability to see details at different distances and determine the exact prescription for your glasses or contact lenses. It is the essential first step in detecting short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism or presbyopia.

Tonometry (eye pressure)

It quickly and painlessly measures the fluid pressure inside your eyes. It is a key preventive test for the early detection of glaucoma, a condition that can silently damage the optic nerve.

Biomicroscopy (slit lamp)

It uses a specialised bright-field microscope to examine the anterior and posterior structures of the eye (cornea, iris, lens and retina) in detail. It enables the diagnosis of cataracts, dry eye or inflammation.

Fundus examination (ophthalmoscopy)

It enables the ophthalmologist to examine the back of the eyeball in detail, including the retina, the macula and the blood vessels. It is crucial for monitoring patients with diabetes, high blood pressure or suspected glaucoma.

Computerised field of view

Assess the extent of your peripheral vision. This is a key test for the diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma, as well as for detecting any potential neurological conditions affecting the visual pathways.

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)

It works like an ‘ultrasound scan using light’, producing cross-sectional images of the retina with micrometre-level precision. It is vital for diagnosing and monitoring macular diseases (such as AMD) and optic nerve disorders.

Corneal topography

It provides a precise analysis of the topography, shape and curvature of the cornea. It is the gold standard for the diagnosis of keratoconus, pre-operative assessment prior to laser refractive surgery, and the fitting of complex contact lenses.

Retinography

It captures high-definition images of the fundus to provide a permanent record of the condition of your retina. It enables you to compare changes over time in lesions, nevi (moles) or diabetic retinopathy with a high degree of accuracy.

Surgical procedures

Refractive Surgery

The definitive solution to ending your reliance on glasses or contact lenses. We offer personalised treatment for short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism using advanced laser techniques or the implantation of high-quality intraocular lenses.

Cataract Surgery

A safe and quick procedure to restore visual clarity lost due to the ageing of the lens of the eye. We replace the cataract with a premium intraocular lens tailored to your specific visual needs.

Strabismus Surgery

A surgical procedure designed to weaken or strengthen the eye muscles in order to restore correct eye alignment. It improves both the aesthetic appearance and visual function, as well as depth perception.

Blepharoplasty

Cosmetic and functional surgery designed to remove excess skin and fat deposits from the eyelids. It rejuvenates the eyes and improves the upper field of vision when this is obstructed by sagging tissue.

Lacrimal ducts

Specialist surgical solutions to correct blockages in the tear duct that cause constant watering and infections. We restore the eye’s natural drainage effectively on an outpatient basis.

Eyelid Ptosis

Precise correction of the upper eyelid levator muscle when it is drooping. This enables a symmetrical, functional and aesthetically pleasing eye opening that fully clears the line of sight.

Retina (vitrectomy)

Highly complex intraocular microsurgery to treat serious retinal conditions such as detachments, vitreous haemorrhages, macular holes or membranes that seriously impair central vision.

Glaucoma

State-of-the-art surgical and laser procedures designed to reduce intraocular pressure in a controlled manner. Vital for permanently halting progressive damage to the optic nerve and preserving vision.

Specialisms of this Unit

Strabismus in Children and Adults

Comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of misalignment of the eyes at any age. We focus on restoring correct eye alignment to improve binocular vision, visual function and the patient’s self-esteem.

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

Specialised treatment to stimulate visual development in the eye that has not achieved normal visual acuity during childhood. We combine traditional occlusion with advanced, personalised visual therapies.

Diplopia (Double Vision)

A clinical approach for patients who see two images of the same object due to ocular misalignment or neurological problems. We use high-precision prisms, botulinum toxin or surgery, depending on the individual case.

Binocular Vision

Personalised visual training programmes designed to improve binocular coordination, optimise three-dimensional (depth) vision and relieve eye strain associated with prolonged screen use.

Neuro-ophthalmology

Expert assessment of visual disturbances originating in the nervous system or the optic nerve. Crucial for diagnosing optic neuritis, cranial nerve palsies or complex vision loss.

GazeLab Video-Ophthalmoscope

A state-of-the-art technological system that records and analyses eye movements with the utmost scientific precision. It is an essential tool for the objective study and monitoring of strabismus and nystagmus.

04

Contact Lenses

Personalised fitting and follow-up care for contact lenses for each patient

The INOF Contact Lens Unit offers a comprehensive service for the fitting and follow-up of contact lenses, carried out by specialist clinical optometrists under the supervision of ophthalmologists. We work with all types of lenses and pay particular attention to complex cases: keratoconus, irregular corneas, post-surgical patients and children undergoing myopia control.

Types of lenses and specialisms

Daily / Monthly Soft Pads

The most comfortable and versatile option for everyday wear. We fit state-of-the-art lenses with high oxygen permeability and hydration to correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia (age-related long-sightedness) with maximum comfort.

RPG (Rigid Gas-Permeable)

They offer exceptional visual quality, superior to that of soft lenses. They are highly breathable and ideal for patients with high astigmatism or those seeking sharper vision and greater durability.

Scleral Lenses

Advanced-design lenses that rest not on the cornea but on the sclera (the white part of the eye). They create a reservoir of artificial tears that restores vision in cases of irregular corneas and provides significant relief in cases of severe dry eye.

Hybrid Lenses

They combine the best of both worlds: the rigid centre provides the perfect visual acuity of an RPG lens, whilst the soft peripheral edge ensures the comfort and stability of a traditional contact lens.

Orthokeratology

A revolutionary treatment (Ortho-K) that gently reshapes the cornea whilst you sleep. Upon waking, the patient removes the lenses and enjoys perfect vision throughout the day without needing to wear glasses or contact lenses.

LC Therapeutics

They act as a ‘transparent eye patch’. They are used strictly on medical prescription to protect the surface of the eye, relieve pain, promote healing following surgery and treat severe corneal conditions.

Myopia Management

Specialised clinical programmes to slow the progression of myopia in children and adolescents. By using optical designs that create peripheral blurring, we are able to slow down the elongation of the eye and protect their long-term visual health.

05

Ocular Aesthetics

Medical and surgical treatments to rejuvenate and enhance the eyes

The INOF Ocular Aesthetics Unit focuses on the appearance of the eyes and the surrounding area, offering medical and surgical treatments designed to rejuvenate, correct imperfections and enhance the natural expression of the eyes. It combines oculoplastic surgery and periocular aesthetic medicine, always under the supervision of an ophthalmologist, to achieve natural and long-lasting results.

Available treatments

Blepharoplasty

A procedure to rejuvenate the eyes by removing excess skin and fat deposits from the upper and lower eyelids. It improves a tired appearance and, in some cases, widens the field of vision.

Cantoplasty

A procedure that adjusts and repositions the outer corner of the lower eyelid to tighten it and give the eye a more almond-shaped, youthful appearance. Ideal for correcting sagging or drooping eyelids.

Botulinum toxin

A non-surgical treatment to smooth out expression lines and facial wrinkles, particularly between the eyebrows, on the forehead and around the eyes. It temporarily relaxes the muscles to give a more rested and refreshed appearance.
